What is Tenormin?

Tenormin (atenolol) is a beta-blocker that affects the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins). Tenormin is used to treat angina (chest pain) and hypertension (high blood pressure).

Tenormin is also used to lower the risk of death after a heart attack.

Important information

You should not use this Tenormin if you have a serious heart condition such as "AV block," very slow heartbeats, or heart failure. Do not stop taking Tenormin without first talking to your doctor. Stopping suddenly may make your condition worse. If you need to have any type of surgery, you may need to temporarily stop using Tenormin. Be sure the surgeon knows ahead of time that you are using this medicine.p>

How should I take Tenormin?

Take Tenormin exactly as it was prescribed for you. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results. Do not use this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Your blood pressure will need to be checked often. If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using Tenormin. You may need to stop using the medicine for a short time.

It may take up to 2 weeks before you get the full effect of Tenormin. Keep using the medication as directed and tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve. You should not stop taking Tenormin suddenly. Stopping suddenly may make your condition worse.
